Empire of Nostalgia

This symposium examines how developments in trade, imperial policy and war, shipbuilding and navigation brought the Hippocratic emphasis on the environmental factors governing the health of traveleposter_v5rs and settlers to a new phase. In the process, older pathologies such as nostalgia, scurvy, and geophagy assumed dramatically new prominence, underwriting new conceptions of nutrition and motion, and of the relation of the body to the mind (and the imagination to the bowels). I co-organized this symposium with Kevis Goodman and Jonathan Lamb. Additional speakers include Alan Bewell, Jennifer Fleissner, Scott Juenghel, Killian Quigley, and Cristobal Silva.
